Celebrities’ favorites, pearls never leave the limelight for too long. From Coco Chanel to Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Lady Di, we constantly see pearl jewelry on the big screen and on the red carpet. They seem to be the safety net of every actress. They are timeless and beautifully compliment any complexion, as long as you follow a few rules of mixing and matching. More than often they are chosen to the detriment of diamonds or other precious gemstones. To sing their praises even more, we’ve compiled a list of greatest moments from the red carpet when pearls stole the show and mesmerized the viewers.
5. Zooey Deschanel
We’re used with the “New Girl” protagonist to sport a playful, colorful look, so everyone was swept off their feet by the actress at the Golden Globes in 2013. Deschanel perfectly accessorized a simple, strapless red gown with a pearl necklace, pearl earrings and a pearl bracelet, proving you can never overdo it with pearls. The neutral color of her pearl set perfectly suited her fair complexion and the orange red dress. The finished result was a simple and sophisticated look that made Zooey the belle of the ball. 4. Angelina Jolie
It’s no longer a secret that Jolie usually gravitates towards pearls for the red carpet. Whether it’s a multi-strand white choker or big, lush stud earrings, she never fails to turn heads or make our jaws drop. Probably the most striking set comprises her Tahitian pearls. While she looks stunning in off white pearl necklaces, she’s even more elegant with a single strand of black Tahitian pearls around her ivory neck. These types of pearls are produced by the black lip oyster that also makes metallic green or silvery pearls.
3. Emma Watson
Watson’s style is usually a little edgy, but still sophisticated, so we weren’t surprised when she wowed everyone at the Golden Globes in 2014 with a Dior double sided pearl earring. The earrings were nothing new under the Sun by then, but she certainly rocked them with an unusual dress and sleek up do. The popular double sided pearl earrings are very chic and look great paired with messy buns or short bobs. As an alternative for the overpriced Dior ones, other designers are coming out with newer styles and playing around with colors and textures.
2. Scarlett Johansson
The “Lost in Translation” actress chose a single piece of jewelry for the premier of “Don Jon” in 2013. Accessorizing a simple black dress with a delicate short strand of pearls and stilettoes kept the photographers’ flashes going for as long as she was on the red carpet. The V-shaped gold clasp of the necklace added a subtle, elegant detail that looked stunning with the backless dress and complemented Johansson’s fair skin.
1. Lupita Nyong’o
Probably the most talked about dress of 2015 was Lupita Nyong’o gown choice for the Oscars. Comprising no less than 6,000 pearls, the Calvin Klein dress was estimated at $150,000 and was handmade especially for the “12 years a slave” actress. Needless to say, all the eyes were on Lupita when she walked down the red carpet in this mesmerizing dress. If the front of the gown was superb, the back view left everyone speechless. With a simple and refined design, the two straps surrounding her neck created a beautiful contrast against her skin, but still kept everything tasteful and elegant.
